First of all, welcome to Faith! Visiting a new church can be a little overwhelming. Know that we are excited to meet you, get to know you, and share in worship with you!
Our congregation is located in Chico, California, and is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We welcome, without exception, people of any sex, race, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, marital status, physical ability, mental ability, age, or situation in life.
In popular culture, the word “Evangelical” has recently taken on numerous connotations. In our congregation, we joyfully embrace its traditional meaning: “the good news!” What does living in the good news mean for us? It means learning, worshiping, serving, and laughing together as we share a vision of life, drawn from over 4000 years of human stories and experiences contained in our holy writings – the Bible. The central figure of our group is the Messiah/the Christ, who has been and continues to be made known in the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, a peasant laborer from a small town in a Jewish nation some two thousand years ago.
As Lutherans, our group is rooted in the movement begun by a Roman Catholic Monk, Martin Luther, about 450 years ago that encouraged individuals to engage with these sacred writings and to experience the freedom and love from “the source of the universe:" God. We join this movement by attempting, in our imperfect, human way, to seek justice, to show mercy, and to share this love with all living things from our own place and time.
Our congregation itself is comprised of peoples young and old with different talents and interests. We are fortunate to have folks share those talents with us, which is one of the reasons we have such engaging ministries. If you're new to the idea of "ministries," a ministry is a group of people who, through their faith, carry out acts of service. We have quilters, the social ministry, the LGBTQ+ ministry, the men and women's ministries, and many more. You can check them out here.
If you're interested in learning more about us, there are lots of ways to connect! You can always ask questions by phone or email or come in during office hours. Each week a newsletter is sent via email. This includes upcoming events, announcements, shout-outs to members, photos, audio, videos, and more. If you'd like to check out our newsletter, subscrube below (and you can easily unsubscribe at any time, no hangups.) Each month we send out Faith Talks, a printed, monthly newsletter delivered to your homes. There are also copies available in the Sanctuary after service. If you would like Faith Talks delivered to your door so you can read staff and council articles and get the scoop on upcoming events, email us your address which we will keep private.
We hope you will consider joining us on this journey, and discover how the mystery of life is active with you.
