Faith Lutheran Church is a vibrant, Spirit-led faith community committed to living out our faith through worship, learning, service to our neighbors, and by pursuing justice, reconciliation, and wholeness for all.  We value the talents of our members, and seek ways to include and empower each person to live out God’s love for their neighbors. Chico is a beautiful university town located at the base of the Sierra mountains and surrounded by orchards. The 3,670 acre park in the center of town is the heart of Chico, California State University is its pride, and the Sierra Nevada Brewery/Headquarters is its joy. With easy access to outdoor adventure, an average commute time of 17 minutes, and a location right off the I-5 between Portland and San Francisco that serves as an ideal stop for touring bands, Chico offers the best of California living without the headaches.  The congregation has an average Sunday attendance of 150 and is composed of the professional demographics that reflect the main economic bases of the town: academia, farming, and medicine. We are people who love learning, love the land, and love the Lord.

 Overview of the Position

We seek a Director of Worship and Music with the skills and sensitivity to serve as a unifying and energizing presence, who will collaborate with Pastor, staff, and lay leaders to shape worship that honors God, invites experiences of learning and growth, and inspires us to love, worship, and serve.  Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate a preponderance of the following skills and characteristics.

  • Experience as a leader of choirs, bands or other musical ensembles, including the ability to invite participation, organize schedules, and plan repertoire;

  • Experience as a song leader or cantor, or experience identifying and developing leaders to serve in this capacity;

  • Strong keyboard and organ skills, as well as the ability to direct from the keyboard;

  • Stylistic versatility and willingness to play and lead (or learn to play and lead) music from varied traditions and styles, from Bach to the Blues;

  • Appreciation of music's role within Lutheran worship;

  • Invite and encourage the significant musical gifts already within the congregation;

  • Welcome the full participation of visitors as well as our intergenerational community;

  • Celebrate God and God's people in both inclusive and expansive ways;

  • Honor the tapestry of experiences, cultures, languages, and traditions present in our community, while remaining open to what is new and yet unknown.

  • A team player, able to offer creative input in planning and brainstorming as well as receive the gifts and perspectives of others;

  • Willingness to teach volunteers of varied ages and musical skills, with a commitment to nurturing people and valuing the learning process over perfection;

  • Strong communication skills, especially the ability to relate to individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences;

  • Flexibility and grace, as well as patience and a good sense of humor.

The Music Ministry Leader is a full-time position. Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and leading music for worship including two Sunday services, Wednesday evening services, and special services such as Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Christmas.

  • Directing the choir and worship band, including regular weekly rehearsals, and additional rehearsals, as needed;

  • Inviting and coordinating additional ensembles/musicians from the congregation and community, including a variety of skill levels;

  • Collaborating with pastor and worship leaders to plan and assess worship each week;

  • Brainstorm with congregation to spark ideas for worship on a seasonal basis and then implement based on consultation with pastor;

  • Tend to the spiritual formation of worship leaders by fostering relationships with musicians as well as other members throughout the community;

  • Schedule, recruit, and train non-musical worship leaders to ensure that they understand the planned structure for worship, are properly trained, and are able to carry out their ministries;

  • Create worship materials such as bulletins and PowerPoint;

  • Overseeing the maintenance of instruments, musical library, and worship equipment;

  • Managing worship budget; including music copyrights, new music and equipment purchases, and inviting guest musicians;

  • Providing music for weddings and funerals, as negotiated;

  • Providing for substitute musicians, as needed;

  • Coordinate with community musical groups as they use the congregational facilities.

Compensation:

  • Salary of $50,000 to $60,000, depending on experience, plus benefit package including health insurance, retirement contributions, and social security.

  • 4 weeks paid vacation

  • Paid time and budget for continuing education

  • Budget to invite guest musicians
